Dr. Amar Rewari in The Epoch Times: Are GLP-1s Really Miracle Drugs?
Dr. Amar Rewari tells The Epoch Times he’s “cautiously optimistic” about GLP-1 drugs and cancer, but warns it’s too soon for broad off-label use.
Dr. Amar Rewari was featured in The Epoch Times article “Are GLP-1s Really Miracle Drugs?” by Amy Denney, published October 3, 2026. The piece looks at the growing body of research suggesting GLP-1 medications, best known for weight loss, may also affect inflammation, heart disease, dementia, and cancer.
As chief of radiation oncology at Luminis Health and adjunct assistant professor at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Dr. Rewari offered a cancer specialist’s view on the excitement around these drugs. Early observational studies have linked GLP-1 use to lower breast cancer incidence and reduced cancer spread in several cancer types. Dr. Rewari said he is “cautiously optimistic,” but stressed that none of the newer cancer findings are yet strong enough to change how doctors practice medicine.
He also cautioned against using GLP-1s without a clear medical reason. In his view, it is too early for broad off-label use. For people who are otherwise healthy and don’t have high risk factors, he recommends focusing on lifestyle changes rather than turning to a pill or injection.
The article notes that more rigorous research, especially double-blind, placebo-controlled trials, is still needed to confirm whether GLP-1s are safe and effective for the expanding list of conditions being studied.
