Dr. Amar Rewari in The Independent: The Harmful Effects of Insurance Delays on Cancer Care

Dr. Amar Rewari spoke with The Independent about the severe consequences of health insurance prior authorization delays on cancer treatment outcomes.

In a recent article by The Independent, Dr. Amar Rewari discussed the life-threatening impact of health insurance delays on cancer patients. As the chief of radiation oncology at Luminis Health, an adjunct professor at Johns Hopkins, and a board member of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), Dr. Rewari highlighted how the "prior authorization" process acts as a dangerous delay tactic used by insurance companies to control costs. He explained that these bureaucratic hurdles not only cause immense stress for patients but can also reduce the likelihood of a cure by stalling essential treatments, PET scans, and MRIs. Dr. Rewari also noted that his Maryland clinic has had to hire additional staff just to handle the heavy administrative burden of fighting for patient care approvals—a critical issue he continues to advocate against on his healthcare podcast, Value Health Voices.
