Dr. Amar Rewari Discusses Cancer Survivorship Care Gaps and Proposed Legislation

Dr. Amar Rewari, Chief of Radiation Oncology for Luminis Health, weighs in on the Comprehensive Cancer Survivorship Act and the operational challenges of improving follow-up care for cancer survivors.

Dr. Amar Rewari was featured in a recent article exploring the Comprehensive Cancer Survivorship Act (CCSA), a bipartisan bill aimed at addressing the significant gaps in care that cancer survivors face after treatment ends.

In the piece, Dr. Rewari spoke to the real-world challenges clinicians encounter when providing survivorship care — particularly around reimbursement. He highlighted how the lack of a clear billing code makes it difficult for physicians to be compensated for follow-up visits, which in turn limits the survivorship services they can offer.

Dr. Rewari also offered a candid perspective on the operational questions the CCSA raises. While supportive of the bill's intent, he pointed out concerns about who would cover the infrastructure costs needed to implement its requirements — such as facilitating electronic medical record communication between the multiple providers involved in a survivor's care.

"I love the intent," Dr. Rewari said. "I just worry about, operationally, how's this actually going to happen?"
