Dr. Amar Rewari in The Independent: Exposing the Dangers of Insurance Red Tape
In a feature by The Independent, Dr. Amar Rewari discusses the life-threatening consequences of insurance delays and prior authorization for cancer patients, advocating for urgent systemic reform.
We are proud to share that Dr. Amar Rewari was recently featured in an exclusive report by The Independent investigating the severe challenges cancer patients face due to health insurance red tape.
In the article, titled "'It would be cheaper if I died:' Cancer patients are battling insurance companies for their lives," Dr. Rewari provides expert insight into the real-world consequences of "prior authorization"—a bureaucratic cost-control measure that often delays life-saving care.
What Dr. Rewari Discussed: As the Chief of Radiation Oncology at Luminis Health and a board member of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), Dr. Rewari emphasized that when it comes to treating aggressive tumors, time is critical. He explained to The Independent that "any delays can cause negative outcomes in terms of less likelihood for cure, as well as the treatment not working."
He also highlighted the immense administrative burden placed on medical providers, noting that his clinic has had to hire additional staff solely to navigate the approval process for standard procedures like MRI and PET scans. Dr. Rewari described these hurdles as often being "purely delays" used by insurers to reduce expenses, unfortunately at the cost of patient health and increased stress.
