Dr. Amar Rewari joins NewsNation to clarify misconceptions regarding Intraoperative Radiation Therapy (IORT) access in the U.S., emphasizing patient safety and scientific standards.
Dr. Rewari Debunks Myths Surrounding IORT Availability on NewsNation
In a recent appearance on NewsNation, Dr. Amar Rewari, MD, MBA, FASTRO, addressed growing controversy surrounding Intraoperative Radiation Therapy (IORT) for breast cancer treatment. The segment investigated claims that access to IORT in the United States is being artificially limited by profit motives rather than medical necessity.
Serving in his capacity as Chair of the Health Policy Council for the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), Dr. Rewari provided a critical counter-perspective to reports suggesting U.S. patients are being denied care available internationally.
During the interview, Dr. Rewari refuted the assertion that American women face restricted access to this technology compared to patients abroad. "I would say that's blatantly false," Dr. Rewari stated, clarifying that access to IORT in the United States is actually robust. He highlighted that ASTRO’s cautious stance on the procedure is rooted strictly in "science, not profit," specifically citing data regarding re-occurrence rates to ensure the highest standards of patient safety.
